Abstract:

A long standing open problem in statistical mechanics is the derivation of Boltzmann equation from a Hamiltonian system in a Boltzmann-Grad regime. Such a system is a microscopic model for a dilute gas and under the Boltzmann-Grad scaling the mean free path of a particle is positive and finite. I discuss a family of stochastic interacting particle systems for which the mean free path has the same property, and show how one can establish the kinetc equation for it.
