In this talk I will recall the classifying spaces for K-theory which can be constructed from smoothing operators on a manifold and the way they can be used to describe the families index of Atiyah and Singer. This also leads to a direct definition of the Determinant bundle and as time permits I will discuss results which follow from this approach.
