Abstract:

A few years ago Kashiwara formulated a set of deep conjectures about the topology of algebraic varieties. These conjectures are a vast generalization of the work of Lefschetz from the 1920's. In my talk I will describe the Kashiwara conjectures starting from the work of Lefschetz. There are two independent proofs of the conjectures. The first one, arithmetic in nature, utilizes the (geometric) Langlands program and proceeds by first establishing a conjecture of de Jong. The second one, analytic in nature, utilizes non-abelian Hodge theory. At the end of the lecture I will discuss these two proofs.
