Abstract:

The group theoretic structure of the "universal operations" on certain families of single loop spaces is analyzed, and identified as a group of natural transformations. Their counterparts on the level of double loop spaces are analyzed. Consequences are (1) bounds on the order of the torsion in the homotopy groups of certain spaces, as well as (2) construction of specific torsion of "higher order" in the homotopy groups of certain finite complexes.
