Abstract:

The Teichmuller space parametrizes complex structures on a given surface S. We will show that there exists a generalization of the Teichmuller theory related to a pair (G,S), where G is a real simple Lie group, e.g. SL_n(R). In the case when G = SL_2 we recover the classical theory from a different point of view. On the other hand when G = SL_n but S is a simple surface we come to a theory of totally poisitive matrices originated by Schoenberg and Krein-Gokhberg in 30's. This is a joint work with V. Fock.
