Abstract:
We will introduce random matrices and orthogonal polynomial ensembles of random variables. As an example of the variety of connections afforded by these two topics, we will briefly discuss the statistical behavior of random rhombus tilings of hexagons. Following that we will explain how orthogonal polynomials are used to obtain useful representations of fundamental statistics for these models. The connections between various models (such as those that will be described) comes about through detailed asymptotic analysis of these fundamental formulae.Date: Thursday, October 14, 2004
