The Hardy-Littlewood method is a technique of analytic number theory. It was spectacularly applied by Vinogradov in 1937 to show that every large odd number is a sum of three primes. I will describe recent joint work with Terence Tao in which we have extended the method to derive, for example, an asymptotic for the number of 4-term arithmetic progressions of primes less than N. A role is played by so-called 2-step nilmanifolds, and I will endeavour to explain in elementary terms what these are, and why they are relevant to the theory.
