Abstract:

The norms introduced by Gowers in 2001 in his proof of Szemerédi's Theorem appear to have an important role in some parts of combinatorial number theory (see the recent works of Green and Tao). The semi-norms introduced independently by Kra and myself in the resolution of a problem in ergodic theory appear surprisingly close. I present these two objects and discuss the light that each one brings to the other.
