The notion of n-operad came from n-category theory. 1-operads are clasical nonsymmetric operads. For any n there is a pair of adjoint functors (desymmetrisation and symmetrisation) between categories of n-operads and symmetric operads. I will show that there is a contractible topological n-operad (the Getzler-Jones operad) whose symmetrisation is exactly the operad of compactified configuration spaces of points in R^n of Fulton and Macpherson. This implies that contractible n-operads detect n-fold loop spaces.
