The conjecture expresses algebraic K-theory (or L) of a group ring in terms of stratified homology of classifying spaces, with coefficients in K of virtually cyclic subgroups. This is a deep refinement of the Novikov and Baum-Connes conjectures and a great deal of work has been done on special cases. We describe a promising approach to the general case.
