Abstract:

Absolute Galois groups are among the richest mathematical objects studied by mathematicians. The Bloch-Kato conjecture (recently proved by Voevodsky, Rost, and Weibel) gives an elegant description of the cohomology of the absolute Galois groups. In recent joint work with Ido Efrat and Jan Minac, we have found (using the Block-Kato conjecture!) some remarkably small and accessible quotients of the absolute Galois groups which determine the entire Galois cohomology. As an application we are able to give a new cohomological characterisation of maximal p-extensions. I will present an overview of this work.
