Title: What mathematicians actually do: some examples from dynamics.
Speaker: John Franks
Speaker Info: Northwestern University
Brief Description:
Special Note: Noyes Chair Inaugural Lecture
Abstract:

Explaining what a research mathematician actually does, in a way that is accessible to a non-technical audience, is a challenging task. This lecture will give some simple examples which illustrate the methodology and spirit of creating new mathematical knowledge. I will attempt to describe the important role that abstraction plays in the way mathematicians think. My hope is that the lecture will be understandable to anyone in the Northwestern community.
