Title: How Chaos arises
Speaker: James Yorke

Abstract:

I will describe how maps depending on a parameter become chaotic as a parameter is increased -- for low dimensional systems. This has been a long discussed topic in the physics literature. The way the questioned is defined there are perhaps a dozen distinct routes. But Evelyn Sander and I have redefined it and have proved there is a unique route, one that is different from all previously described routes in the physics literature. See http://arxiv.org/abs/0910.3570 and http://arxiv.org/abs/0903.3613 for paper related to the talk.
