Abstract:

Perhaps the best known example of tilings are the Penrose tilings of the plane. Each tiling can be assigned an associated "tiling space"--a dynamical system on the closed translational orbit of the tiling. Many properties of a tiling can be interpreted as corresponding to properties of the associated tiling space. For example, a tiling is repetitive if and only if the associated dynamical system is minimal. We will discuss this correspondence.
