Title: Approximate groups and their applications
Speaker: Ben Green
Speaker Info: Cambridge University and Radcliffe Institute, Harvard

Abstract:

I will introduce the notion of an approximate group and describe a few theorems about their structure. I will also talk about a very recent result of Emmanuel Breuillard, Terry Tao and myself in which the so-called Suzuki groups are shown to be "expanders" by using the technology of approximate groups. I will explain what this means and how it finishes a programme of Kassabov, Lubotzky and Nikolov, showing that all non-abelian simple groups are expanders.
