Title: Knots, tangles, and braid groups
Speaker: Hiro Tanaka
Speaker Info: Northwestern University
Brief Description:

Abstract:

I will begin the talk by explaining why you should care about knots, by making connections to physics, geometry, and number theory. Then, for the sake of doing some actual math, I'll talk about how certain representations of braid groups give rise to tangle invariants, and in particular, invariants of knots.
