Abstract:
We will reproduce Bowen's simple but celebrated example of a horseshoe with positive Lebesgue measure. As Pengfei has proved in last week's talk, for C^{1+\alpha} volume preserving Anosov diffeo, all invariant hyperbolic set must be of 0 or full measure. This example will give a hint on how this may fail when the diffeo is only assumes to be C^1. However, it is not known if such examples exists in the volume perserving case. I will address some possible attempts to the question at the end.Date: Thursday, February 04, 2010The talk should be very accessible, I'll start with reminding everyone the construction of the standard horseshoe.
