Eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a compact Riemannian manifold are models of energy eigenstates in quantum mechanics. In the high eigenvalue limit, they reflect properties of the geodesic flow. We will illustrate this in the simplest model geometries: sphere, torus, and hyperbolic surface and explain that eigenfunctions in the hyperbolic case behave like random spherical harmonics in the sphere case.
