In 2000 Thomas Hales proved that regular hexagons provide a least-perimeter tiling of the plane by unit areas. What is the best tiling by pentagons? We discuss some new results and open questions in the plane and beyond. Students play an important role.Date: Wednesday, May 16, 2012
