Abstract:

Most of you have at some point come across the word "resolution". This is some mystical procedure used all the time in algebra and topology that consists of replacing an object by another object or sequence of objects related to it. The fundamental concept unifying these constructions is that of derived functor. So I'll define what that is, give classical examples from algebra, algebraic geometry, and topology, and connect abstract definitions with computational ones.
