Internal Diffusion Limited Aggregation (internal DLA) is a lattice growth model introduced in 1986 by chemists Meakin and Deutch to describe processes such as electropolishing and corrosion. The main question they ask is, how smooth a surface does the polishing produce? I will review earlier work concerning this model and then discuss joint work with Lionel Levine and Scott Sheffield in which we answer the question. At the same time, we find that the mean fluctuation of internal DLA is governed by a variant of the Gaussian Free Field, which I will describe.
