Abstract:

Topological field theories (TFTs) are a way of describing the topology of manifolds in terms of algebra. I will explain what a TFT is from a mathematical point of view, concentrating on the 1d and 2d cases. The talk will be very elementary, with be plenty of pictures and examples.
