Abstract:

We discuss some new characterizations of the catenoid. Recall, the catenoid is the unique non-flat minimal surface of revolution in R^3. It is one of the simplest non-trivial minimal surfaces and is an important model surface. Indeed, rescalings of the catenoid provide an important model for the failure of smooth compactness for sequences of minimal surfaces in three-manifolds.
