Abstract:

We will discuss the idea of Langlands' paper "Beyond Endoscopy", and give several recent examples. From there we give a detailed study of a beyond endoscopy approach to the symmetric cube L-function for a certain family of automorphic representations. In this family, we can show the symmetric cube L-function is analytic to the left of Re(s)=1. The key idea being an exponential sum identity of Katz-Patterson, which has some connection to the Fundamental Lemma. All these ideas require the use of analytic number theory, which is quite unlike the treatment of endoscopy and the stable trace formula.
