Any smooth affine hypersurface Z of complex dimension n is homotopy equivalent to a real n-dimensional cell complex. Starting from the Newton polytope of the defining function, I will give an explicit combinatorial construction of a real n-dimensional space S which embeds into Z as a deformation retract.
