Abstract:

We introduce the notion of arithmetic manifold. A basic example is the quotient of the upper half plane by SL_2(Z). Then I'll discuss various phenomena in which arithmetic manifolds M behave very differently from small perturbations of M. Some of these phenomena will be analytic (involving the spectrum of the Laplacian) and others will be purely topological.
