I will discuss in more detail the topology of the arithmetic manifold associated to SL_n, i.e. the moduli space of flat tori. This is related both to algebraic K-theory of the integers, and to questions in the Langlands program. After a general survey, I will try to discuss the "exterior algebra" that seems to show up in the cohomology, near the middle dimension.
