Abstract:

uppose you get your ear-phones entangled around a doughnut with two holes... an entirely probable scenario! Geometric Group Theory can help with this (age-old) problem of untangling ear-phones. Geometric Group Theory intrinsically links geometry and group theory. We will discuss how one might think "algebraically" about geometry, and think "geometrically" about algebra. Finally, we will see how this approach can help us answer our motivating question.
