Abstract:

Traffic jams are an all too familiar experience for drivers. There is often a perfectly good explanation for these: an accident, construction, merging lanes, but occasionally a driver might pass through a jam with no perceivable explanation. In this talk using the method of characteristics and shocks we will develop a model for traffic flow to identify conditions under which "phantom jams" occur and describe their evolution.
