Abstract:

Nowadays, many algebraic geometers think that the beginning of modern algebraic geometry was in 1849, when Cayley and Salmon first discovered the fact that there are 27 lines on every smooth curve surface, and described the structure of the configuration of these lines. Whole books have been written about this fact. We will go through the proof in modern language and talk about various connects to deformation theory, intersection theory, etc.
