Abstract:
A topological order is a topological phase of matter with long-range entanglement. Its low energy effective theory is a TQFT. It has been the focus of study in condensed mater physics in the recent years. In this talk, I will use the boundary-bulk duality in topological orders as a guide to give an outline of the categorical study of topological excitations (or topological defects) in topological orders. In particular, I will explain that the boundary-bulk duality can be formulated as a functor which maps higher categories to their centers. This duality leads to an interesting mathematical phenomenon that the center of center is trivial. In the end, if time permits, I will explain some applications of factorization homology in the study of topological orders.Date: Monday, November 28, 2016
