Abstract:
In this talk, I will define the Hochschild homology of an associative algebra and compute it for the polynomial algebra of two variables from scratch (i.e., without using any nontrivial theorem like the HKR theorem!). I will use this computation as an excuse to introduce some concepts from noncommutative algebraic geometry, which will then lead naturally to a new construction of negative cyclic homology and its variations (which I will also define). This construction, which appeared first in the work of Ginzburg-Schedler-Tsygan, provides a convenient setting to relate the noncommutative calculus on an associative algebra with the ordinary (commutative) calculus on the space of representations of the algebra.Date: Tuesday, July 10, 2018
