Abstract:

We present a Moore-Schmidt theorem about the triviality of the first cohomology class of cocycles for the action of an arbitrary group on an arbitrary probability space and cocycles with values in an arbitrary compact Abelian group. Since classical tools such as measurable selection criteria and disintegration of measures are not more applicable in such general settings, we will introduce and apply topos-theoretic techniques of measure-theoretic sheaves and conditional set theory by consequently working in a “pointfree” setting. We discuss some motivation and the potential usefulness of these techniques in ergodic structure theory. The talk is based on work with Terence Tao.
