Abstract:

The study of totally geodesic submanifolds plays a key role in our understanding of the geometry of hyperbolic manifolds. I will give a discussion of history and motivation and present some recent results concerning finiteness of totally geodesic submanifolds in non-arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds of finite volume. This answers a question asked by Reid and McMullen. I will also present analogous results in the complex hyperbolic setting. This is joint work with Bader, Miller and Stover.
