Abstract:

I will explain a translation between the study of totally geodesic submanifolds and the study of orbit closures in certain homogeneous dynamical systems. In the presence of "enough" totally geodesic submanifolds, equidistribution results in homogeneous dynamics allow one to build an invariant measure on a certain inhomogeneous extension of the homogeneous system. This measure allows one to build a certain kind of "boundary map" that allows one to prove rigidity results.
