Abstract:

The Brauer group (and space) of Azumaya algebras up to Morita equivalence encodes interesting information about the structure of commutative ring spectra. For a non-connective commutative ring spectrum R, a major obstacle to understanding the full Brauer group of R is the fact that Azumaya algebras are generally not trivialized by passing to an appropriate etale or Galois extension. But there are a lot of fascinating phenomena when studying etale locally trivializable Azumaya algebras as well, and that will be the focus of this talk. The examples of KO, TMF, and the derived moduli stack of elliptic curves will be the main characters. This talk is based on work with Antieau and Meier.
