Defect measures detect how a bounded family in $L^2$ on a compact manifold $M$ loses compactness. From a semiclassical viewpoint, we will see clearly at which locations of concentration, and at which frequencies of oscillation, such losses of compactness occur. We will also discuss some related applications in hyperbolic PDEs.
