Abstract:

Dynamical systems is a topic that is not always taught to undergraduates or first year graduate students. When it is, it is usually in terms of differential equations, at least that's how it was for me as an undergraduate. It was through summer schools and REU's that I first learned about this field in other contexts. I would like my talk to serve as an introduction to the world of symbolic dynamics. I will start from defining what a symbolic dynamical system is followed by a couple examples and interesting properties of these examples. Time permitting, I would also like to talk about automorphism groups of these systems and some recent results on this area.

I have prepared this talk with first year graduate students and Causeway students in mind so I will especially encourage them to attend.
