Abstract:
I will discuss randomness-structure dichotomies, both unconditional and conditional, for point counts of certain varieties over finite and infinite fields. (This includes a project suggested by Amit Ghosh and Peter Sarnak.) The results concern Q-points on cubic fourfolds, e.g. x_1^3 + ... + x_6^3 = 0, and F_q-points on their hyperplane sections. Geometry of low-degree varieties, statistics of L-function families (predictions of Random Matrix Theory type), and work of Hooley and Heath-Brown all play an important role.Date: Friday, March 11, 2022
