Abstract:

The A^1-degree is a generalization of the Brouwer degree to the world of algebraic geometry. In contrast to the classical situation which only lives over R, one can study the A^1-degree over all sorts of base fields. A natural question to ask is how the A^1-degree behaves along field extensions. We will discuss what is known about this game of chutes and ladders, as well as remaining open questions. This is based on joint work with Thomas Brazelton, Robert Burklund, Michael Montoro, and Morgan Opie.
