Title: Gromov's theorem on groups of polynomial growth
Speaker: Christian Gorski
Speaker Info: Northwestern University
Brief Description:

Abstract:

I'll talk about one of my favorite theorems. This theorem of Gromov says that a "coarse-geometric" condition on a group implies an algebraic one; more specifically, it says that all finitely generated groups of polynomial growth are virtually nilpotent. First I'll explain what all these words mean (with examples), and then I'll give a (very) broad overview of the proof.
