Title: Batalin-Vilkovisky formality for classical Chern-Simons field theory

We will give an introduction to the Batalin-Vilkovisky bracket on the variational complex in classical field theory: this is a general formalism for handling gauge symmetries and their generalizations. We show that the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism is a differential graded Lie algebra.

Using this result, we prove that the differential graded Lie algebra of functionals associated to the Chern-Simons theory of a semisimple Lie algebra is homotopy abelian, and in particular, formal. This may be viewed as an analogue of the Darboux Theorem.
