The Goldman Lie algebra associated to a surface F controls the Poisson structure of the GL_n character varieties of F. The Homfly skein algebra of F quantizes Goldman's Lie algebra, and earlier work with Morton lead to a conjecture that the skein algebra of F is isomorphic to the Hall algebra of the Fukaya category of F. In this talk we explain the conjecture and its motivation, and discuss some evidence found in joint work with Cooper. We also briefly discuss some stronger followup results in independent work of Haiden.
