The classification of the finite simple groups was announced around 1980,and is spread across hundreds of articles and thousands of pages. The treatment of "quasithin" groups by Mason was in fact never published, having appeared only in a preprint form (completed by Aschbacher).

Now a new treatment of the quasithin problem is being prepared by Aschbacher and Smith (with some parallel treatment by Meierfrankenfeld and Stellmacher).

The talk will survey the overall context of the classification, and indicate progress on the new version of quasithin.
