Abstract:

Spatiotemporal chaos occurs in a large part of the parameter space of the 1+1D complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. These states are often built from local structures than propagate with a well-defined velocity, and collision rules. By a simple transformation these structures can be related to homoclinic orbits in a low-dimensional dynamical system. After describing this relation, I'll discuss the remarkable stability properties of these structures, and show how this might help in understanding the very complicated dynamics of the Ginzburg-Landau model. If time permits, I'll discuss the problem of finding appropriate order parameters for these states.
