Abstract:

Although the results generalise to higher K-theory, in this talk we will focus on K_1. This is for the sake of simplicity and clarity.

We will begin with an introduction. First we will talk about determinants, about generalising them to non-commutative rings, and about the group K_1, in which the generalised determinant takes its values.

Then we will remind ourselves about the classical obstructions to defining K_1 for derived categories. After that, we will briefly review what I proved ten years ago. And finally, we will say a little about the improvements that Vaknin has recently made.
