Spiral waves have been observed in many chemical and biological systems as well as in reaction-diffusion equations that model such systems. Spiral waves can destabilize in various different ways leading, for instance, to meandering or drifting spirals or to spiral break-up. We illustrate how the linearized equation can be used to explain transport towards the spiral core or the far-field and to understand the spatio-temporal structure of patterns observed after bifurcation. We also discuss how the different spectral properties of spiral waves on bounded discs versus the entire plane help to understand the above instabilities.
