I will try to explain Langlands' philosophy (concerning the relationship between representation theory and number theory/geometry) in fairly general terms.

I will then begin to discuss the representation theoretic point of view on classical modular forms. (This is a natural ``first example'' to consider in trying to understand Langlands' philosophy.)
