Abstract:

This is a defense of my thesis. We explain how the work of Devinatz and Hopkins implies that the Lubin-Tate spectrum E_n is a continuous G_n-spectrum, where G_n is the extended Morava stabilizer group. Using this continuous action, for closed subgroups of G_n, we define homotopy fixed point spectra (e.g. for E_n smashed with a finite spectrum X) and construct their descent spectral sequences.
