Abstract:

We will consider the inverse problem of determining a Riemannian metric on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary from the distance function between boundary points. This is know in differential geometry as the boundary rigidity problem. This problem also arose in geophysics as an attempt to determine the substructure of the Earth by measuring the travel times of seismic waves. We will describe a connection of boundary rigidity with the inverse problem of determining a Riemannian metric from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to the Laplace-Beltrami operator.
